citronella
(cymbopogon Winterianus)

Selection of Land :
Can be grown in any type of soil but loamy sandy soil is preferred for cultivation of Citronella. Highland should select for cultivation of Citronella with Ph of 5.8-8 and good organic content of soil.

Planting Materials Used :
Citronella is cultivated through slips/suckers. For this one year old plant is uprooted to collect its slips. The extra root and leaves are than cut off form this slip. Height of a good slip should be 20-25 cm.

Land Preparation and Planting :
The land can be ploughed 2-4 times and leveled. Use ratovator or harrow to break the clod and bring the soil to a fine tilt. During soil preparation basal dose of FYM is added and thoroughly mixed into the soil. A hole of 4-5 inches depth should be made with the help of a bamboo stick at a distance of 2fit and slips (seedlings) are planted into the hole and press the soil so that slips stays firmly in the soil.

Planting Time :

Can be planted throughout the year provided irrigation through rain or manual is available immediately after planting.

Irrigation :
Immediate irrigation is necessary after planting. Otherwise citronella mostly depends on rain water.

Weeding and Management :
Weeding is necessary during early days of growth of plant.Weeding is done after 20-25 days of planting and next after 40-45 days. Weeds doesn’t grow with the growth of plant so early care is needed.

Harvesting :

Citronella is a grass plant and is considered to be five year crop.4-5 harvest is achieved for citronella with harvest after 4 months of planting and next after every 3 months interval. One more harvest can be achieved during monsoon due to vigorous growth of plant during that period.

Uses of the Oil :

Oil of citronella, Java type, is one of the most important essential oils. Oils with a high content of citronellal are used chiefly for the isolation of citronellal, and for conversion of it into citronellol, citronellol esters, hydroxy citronellal, and synthetic menthol.

Oils with a low citronellal and high geraniol content are used for the extraction of geraniol, and conversion of it into its esters. This type of oil is lower priced, and therefore serves well for the scenting of soaps and technical preparations where cost is of prime consideration.

The bulk of Java type citronella oil, however, is of the usual, normal quality (35% of citronella and 85% of total geraniol). These oils are employed for the extraction of aromatic isolates, as well as for the scenting of soaps and all kinds of technical preparations.
